The Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI) is aiming to show the world that the Northern Ireland creative sector can produce broadband content which is second to none. In order to gather exemplars of what Northern Ireland companies can produce the department launched the Broadband Content Initiative in April 2006. This £1.75m initiative is part of the Secretary of State´s Skills and Science Fund.

Eighty one companies responded to the initial call for projects. A shortlist of 20 projects were subsequently selected and provided with support to develop their ideas. These were presented to a commissioning panel in October 2006. The commissioning panel recommended funding for six showcase projects, one of which was EdCast Medical.
